BFA: Conservatory-Style, Performance Focused
A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Theatre is often the most performance-heavy option. These programs are designed to function much like a conservatory within a university setting. Students typically spend the majority of their time in acting, voice, dance, movement, and rehearsal.
Because of the intensive training, BFAs usually require fewer general education classes than other degrees. That said, students who enter college with AP, IB, or dual-credit coursework may be able to place out of additional general education requirements. This creates even more room for performance-based classes or electives.
BFAs tend to have structured schedules, limited flexibility, and a cohort-based model. This is a great fit for students who know they want to train intensively and are comfortable committing most of their academic time to theatre.
BM: Music-Centered, Conservatory Adjacent
A Bachelor of Music (BM) degree is also conservatory-style but with a stronger emphasis on music. In musical theatre-focused BM programs, students often take more music theory, ear training, sight singing, and applied voice lessons than their BFA counterparts.
While acting and dance are still part of the curriculum, the vocal and musical foundation is typically deeper and more rigorous. Some BM programs are housed within a school of music rather than a theatre department. This alone, can shape the overall training experience.
This path is a strong fit for students who are particularly interested in vocal performance, musicianship, or who want flexibility to pursue music-related careers alongside musical theatre.
BA: Liberal Arts with Flexibility
A Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Musical Theatre or Theatre Studies is generally more liberal arts–focused. These degree types have the allowance for more elective choices. These programs include a broader range of general education courses and allow for greater academic flexibility.
BA students often have the option to double major, minor in another field, or explore interests outside of theatre. Training is still present, but it may be less intensive than in a BFA or BM program, depending on the school.
This degree can be ideal for students who love theatre but also want room to explore other academic passions, or for those who are still deciding how theatre fits into their long-term goals.
Which Degree Is “Best”?
There is no single right answer. A BFA, BM, or BA can all lead to fulfilling careers in the performing arts and beyond. What matters most is how the structure of the program aligns with the student’s goals, learning style, and interests.
